This Privacy Policy explains how the Nello iPhone app ("Nello" or "the app") and the website getnello.app handle information. "We", "us" and "our" refer to Simone Salvucci, the independent developer who makes Nello.
1. Who we are
Nello is developed and published by Simone Salvucci, who is the data controller for the limited personal data described in this policy. You can reach us at support@getnello.app for any privacy question or request.
2. Data that stays on your iPhone
Nello's core features work entirely on your device. To sort and search your screenshots, the app creates and stores the following information only on your iPhone, inside Nello's private app storage:
- a list of the screenshots in your photo library, identified by Apple's local photo identifiers;
- the text recognized in each screenshot using Apple's on-device Vision framework, and details derived from it, such as links, email addresses, phone numbers, prices, QR and barcode contents, and the apps a screenshot appears to come from;
- the album each screenshot belongs to, including any manual changes you make;
- your in-app settings and onboarding answers.
This information is not sent to us, to analytics providers or to any other server. Nello does not use cloud-based or generative AI services. Like other app data, it may be included in your iCloud or computer backups of your iPhone, according to your own backup settings; those backups are governed by Apple's privacy policy.
Deleting Nello from your iPhone permanently deletes this information. Your screenshots themselves remain in your photo library.
3. Photo library access
Nello asks for access to your photo library so it can find and read your screenshots. You choose the level of access in iOS: full access, or limited access to selected photos only. You can change or revoke access at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Photos › Nello.
Nello only changes your photo library when you ask it to, for example when you mark a screenshot as a favorite or delete screenshots. iOS asks you to confirm every deletion, and deleted items go to your Recently Deleted album.
4. Usage analytics
To understand how Nello is used, improve onboarding and fix problems, the app sends pseudonymous usage data to our analytics provider, PostHog, using PostHog's EU Cloud. You can turn this off at any time in Nello's settings with Share Usage Analytics. When it is off, the app stops sending analytics, session replays and error reports.
What we collect
- App events, such as app opened, screen viewed, onboarding step completed, album opened, settings changed, paywall viewed, and subscription started or restored, including the product, price and currency.
- Onboarding answers, such as roughly how many screenshots you take, the topics you screenshot most, and what you want Nello to help with.
- Summary numbers, such as how many screenshots are in your library, how many were sorted, how many albums exist, and how many characters a search had. Never the search itself.
- Taps, recorded by the type and position of the button or control in the app's layout, never by the text it shows.
- Session replays: a visual recording of how you move through the app's screens. All text, text inputs and images are masked before anything is sent, and screenshots are always hidden.
- Errors and crashes: technical details about app errors and crashes, such as error messages and where in the code they happened, plus the timing of the app's own network requests.
- Technical information, such as device model, iOS version, app version, language, and approximate location (country or city) derived from your IP address.
- A random identifier created by the app, used to group data from the same installation. It is not linked to your name, email address, Apple ID or advertising identifier.
What we never collect
- Your screenshots or any other photos.
- Text recognized in your screenshots, or anything derived from it such as links, phone numbers, email addresses, prices, codes or detected app names.
- What you type into search.
- Your name, email address, phone number, contacts or precise location.
- Your device's advertising identifier.
We use this data only to operate and improve Nello. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not combine it with data from other companies to track you.
Legal basis (EU/UK): our legitimate interest in maintaining and improving the app, which we balance against your privacy by keeping the data minimal and pseudonymous and by letting you turn it off in the app at any time.
Crash reports from Apple
If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in iOS settings, Apple may share anonymized crash reports and usage statistics with us through App Store Connect. You control this in Settings › Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements.
5. Purchases
Nello Pro is an auto-renewable subscription sold through Apple's App Store. Apple processes your payment and handles billing; we never see your payment card, billing address or Apple ID. The app uses Apple's StoreKit on your device to check whether your subscription is active. Apple provides us with aggregated, non-identifying sales and subscription reports. See Apple's Privacy Policy for how Apple handles purchase data.
6. This website
getnello.app uses no cookies, no analytics and no third-party trackers. The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes technical data such as your IP address and browser type to deliver the pages and protect them from abuse. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
7. Who we share data with
We do not sell or rent personal data, and we do not share it for advertising. We only use these service providers:
| Provider | Purpose | Data |
|---|---|---|
| PostHog, Inc. (EU Cloud, hosted in Germany) | Usage analytics, session replay, error tracking | Usage data described in section 4 |
| Apple Inc. | App distribution, payments, crash reports | As described in Apple's own privacy policy |
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Website hosting | Website request data |
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.
8. How long we keep data
Analytics events and error reports are kept for up to 12 months, and session replays for up to 30 days, and then deleted. Emails you send us are kept for as long as needed to answer you and for up to 24 months afterwards. Data stored on your iPhone stays there until you delete the app.
9. International transfers
Analytics data is stored in the European Union. Some of our providers are based in the United States and may access data from there. Where this happens, transfers are protected by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under the EU and UK GDPR and U.S. state privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act, you may have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- have it corrected or deleted;
- object to or restrict its processing;
- receive it in a portable format;
- lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
To exercise these rights, email support@getnello.app. Because analytics data is pseudonymous and not linked to your identity, we may not be able to match it to you. Deleting and reinstalling the app creates a new random identifier, which stops new events being linked to the old ones. We will never discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
11. Children
Nello is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Security
Data on your iPhone is protected by iOS app sandboxing and, when your device is locked with a passcode, by iOS data protection. Analytics data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we work to protect the limited data we handle.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Nello changes. We will post the new version on this page and update the date at the top. If changes are significant, we will also let you know in the app.
